My Week of Outfits

There are many ostentatious fashion blogs out there with such immaculate outfits that they make me look down at my own clothes in disgust. The truth is, I work every week at a library, and when I’m not doing that I’m usually writing. This doesn’t call for the most fantastic outfits, but it makes for some honest ones.

Some of these outfits I wore to work, some were worn around the house, and some were just what were nearest to me when I crawled from my slumber.

I noticed the hardest thing for me was trying to take photos of my clothes without sprucing them up with extra accessories or a bright lipstick, but I was trying to be honest.

What I really wanted was a true representation of what I wear in a week. I didn’t record my weekend outfits because I was with a dear friend and was having way too much fun to take full photos of what I was wearing. (How’s that for honest?)

The truth is I enjoy getting dressed in the morning. But it has become more important to me to be comfortable now rather than looking perfect fashion-wise. I know that I actually studied fashion, but I have admired cozy knits and billowing dresses more than anything skin tight. What we choose to put on our bodies reveals a lot about us. It tells other people what we wish they thought of us, and it tells them what we think of ourselves.

I really enjoyed doing this, although it was a bit difficult to unwrap myself from blankets and get out my tripod to capture a moment of my day. It was also sometimes boring to take a photo of my Star Wars t-shirt or pair of leggings that I was wearing. But if we don’t celebrate these clothes, even our comfiest of clothes, we don’t see the value in them. I am happy I saw these things in a new way. In my article in Artful Blogging, I talk about how you can change the way you seem an object once you take a photo of it, and that’s how I feel about these items that I wear every week.

I’ll be honest, I was a bit bitter that I could’t wear more spring-styled outfits. Winter is my favorite season, but spring has been teasing me. We got a taste of it, and now I am scowling at the freezing wind outside my door. But I suppose this is what nature has in store for us, so these comfy clothes will be needed a little longer.

After this week of photographing my outfits, I decided I needed to clean out my closet. I tore a lot of things out that just weren’t being worn anymore, and I put some new things in their places. Some beloved pieces are still hanging or sitting folded on my shelves and in my drawers. Clothing is intimate, which is an obvious statement, but probably something we don’t think about enough. It covers us, warms us, and helps us express ourselves. Now that my closet is cleaned, I walk into it every morning and feel as though I’m greeting lots of old friends, and that is always a comfort.

Let me know what you think about my week of outfits! This might be something I try again once it warms up, although I may be spending all my time outside instead. 🙂

“To me, clothing is a form of self-

expression — there are hints about

who you are in what you wear.”
