Now that spring is here (haha) I have been trying to get a more glowy makeup look. This can be hard, since I usually use neutral colors, and highlighting can look a bit extreme. These are a few of the things that I use to get a natural effect. The first is the Anastasia Powder Contour Kit. This has colors for contouring and highlighting, and my favorite is the one in the upper right hand corner. I sweep this under my eyes and more heavily above my cheekbones.

The other product I use is much more affordable. It’s the L’Oreal Powder Glow Illuminator. Since it’s a drugstore highlighter, it’s more chunky with it’s shimmer rather than the buttery texture of the contour kit shades. But it does a great job for noticeable shine. I find this is best for taking selfies, and I use my fingers to dab it above my cheekbones.

What are your favorite highlighting products?

February Favorites

Bee Button – I got this adorable pin while galavanting around Northampton with my friend Emily. She had a matching one, then I bought a bee blouse, and good time was had by all.

Milani Lipsticks (Matte) – Holy cow, these lipsticks are becoming my absolute favorite. They go on easily and aren’t a pain to take off (favorite shade is Matte Passion)

Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events – I am a Very Forceful and Dedicated admirer of Lemony Snicket, so this series was basically all I care about for about six months. I thought it was fantastic, and I binge watched it all and once and then rewatched it again. I’m mostly excited that they are putting so much effort into one of my favorite book series. The casting was impeccable and the acting is excellent. The only criticism I have is that I wish it had that dreary Victorian style that the movie exuded, as it gave off such a dismal mood. But I still loved everything they did with the sets and I am so incredibly ready for the next season.

X-Files – On a much different note, me and my mom have been binge watching X-Files at night. I’m not really sure how this started, but there are so many episodes, so I don’t see it stopping anytime soon. (I want to believe!)

What have you been into this month? I think we are al itching for the weather to warm up so we can go outside, so I’m curious to know what hobbies you’re interested in as well.

Winter Night-Time Routine

-Turn off electronics

Just do it!

-Warm up

I use a hot water bottle or a heated blanket. This completely relaxes me on a cold winter night.

-Turn on Christmas lights

This is the season of light. I truly believe that. When the sun won’t stay up in the sky as long, it’s great to get into the routine of turning on your (hundreds and hundreds of) Christmas lights.

There is something beautiful about lighting up an interior with little twinkles everywhere. I have lights up year-round, but there’s obviously way more right now.

I got these beautiful LED’s that look wonderful around minimal holiday decor.

-Catch up on TV shows

The nights are cold and the energy gets focused inside of the home. Because of this, sharing stories with families and friends by watching movies and TV shows is comforting and exciting. Some of my favorites right now are The Crown, Parks and Rec, and The Office. The warmth of being by the fire and drinking wine and hot chocolate with people you love is irreplaceable. It’s one of my favorite parts of the season.

I also MIGHT keep watching Pretty Little Liars since I have to recap before the last season.

-Scroll on Tumblr/Pinterest

This is where I break the electronics rule.

-Spend time in front of the fire

I suggest cuddling with a pet.

-Get ready for bed

This involves taking off my makeup and brushing my teeth, cleansing, moisturizing, etc. This can sometimes be the hardest time of the night for me. I often get so tired that I don’t feel like doing anything of these things and would rather just crawl to the bed.

Lately I have been using my Clarisonic to buff off any lasting makeup before bed. I think this is really effective at getting rid of dead skin as well, and I have an abundance of that with the chilly weather. The cleanser I’ve been using is so silky and smooth that my skin feels so fresh after. I follow up with a night cream.

I end all my nights snuggled up with extra blankets. There is a beautiful thing about staying warm in the middle of a freezing night. I just moved my bed next to my window, and I love waking up to beautiful snow on the ground. That tends to motivate me to get some sleep. The wintry morning awaits.

What is your night-time routine?

Christmas Gift Guide 2016

Figuring out gifts for people can be very complicated. I have tried to be very organized, very creative, very out-of-the-box, and sometimes I just can’t get it right. Christmas is a magical time, and giving gifts is like communicating that you are in tune with your loved ones and you know what they would like.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money, and you also can, if you wish. I put together some quick ideas for different people in your life. Hopefully these will be helpful and inspire. I am just starting my Christmas shopping now, and I hope I can get it all done by Christmas. I find the best thing to do when picking out gifts is to really listen to people when they say what they want, and keep your ears open all during November and December. People will let you on to what they’ve been wishing for, so I try to jot it down when they mention something they like.

However, sometimes you need more gifts! Sometimes, you need a few more gifts to throw in a bag or add to a bigger gift. These are those gifts. They aren’t anything crazy, just gifts that I think might work out well.

For A Best Friend:

Knit Hat – You just can’t go wrong.

Vintage Camera – Check around flea markets and thrift stores for some old cameras. Instax are all the rage right now, but an old polaroid would also make a great gift. It’s something that they will take care of and is unique, which will make them think of you!

I have an old pink polaroid camera that was a gift and I will always cherish it. While they might be more expensive, you can absolutely try and find a deal. You can also splurge a little for a friend! This is a gift that stands out from the rest.

For A Significant Other (Girl):

Perfume/Handcream/Lotion set –If you’re at a loss for what to get a girl who you are involved with, go with things that smell nice. Just make sure they are a good scent for her! They have a lot of little sets with multiple products inside. I love these things. They last forever and usually all have the same scent. You can find them at most department stores.

I think anything like a nice perfume or lotion will always be appropriate. Maybe take her out shopping and see what scents she gravitates towards. That will be a sure sign to what notes she likes in the perfumes. Also, perfume is always romantic!

Getting lotions and hand creams along with other big gifts is also a great idea. Bath & Body works has amazing lotions that are holiday themed. For a fancier idea, you can see what stores like Anthropologie or Urban Outfitters has. Tocca is a beautiful brand with amazing scents. While a bit more expensive, they are worth it. Go and check out their samples!

For Significant Other (Guy):

Coffe Mug – In my experience, guys like things you can drink out of. And they don’t just have to drink coffee out of it! They can drink whiskey too!

TJMaxx has very cute mugs, but for a more masculine style, check out Urban Outfitters or speciality boutique stores. There are a lot of cute ones with mountains on them and other “adventure” themed ones. Another idea might be getting a thermos that can be used for camping or hiking. Guys like that stuff, right?

Photography Books – The best one I can recommend is called Cabin Porn, you’re welcome.

For Secret Santa :

Interactive Journals – You know those 5 year journals? Those are the perfect kinds of things for people that you are buying gifts for and you just don’t know that well. In fact, any journal or notebook will probably do. They also have ones that you fill in for couples or dream journals. Luckily, there are tons of types out there that can fit different people. And people seem to enjoy them!

There is also a funny journal that is a Guest Bathroom journal. You’ve probably seen that one around.

Going off of this idea, a Moleskin notebook is always a fantastic gift. If I received a Moleskin I would be one happy girl. People write/draw/journal in these things in their own ways. They are classic, simple, and good-quality notebooks. Perfect for writers and artists. You do risk looking like a huge hipster, but eh, who cares?

Stockings :

Post -it Notes – Practical items in stockings are awesome!

Fancy Candles – See Diptique candle above, and then drool, because it is so beautiful.

Travel Size Beauty – If you go to Ulta (Or Target, or anywhere with tiny skin care) you can find these adorable sample sizes of skin care products. This might be perfect for someone who wants to try out a new brand. They have adorable little Christmas packages in Sephora and Ulta to choose from. Finding that in a stocking would be so exciting! You can’t go wrong with beauty, and the little sizes don’t break the bank. You can even stick one in your own stocking.

For Yourself:

Books! Who is surprised here that the only thing I want to buy myself is more books, mostly the beautiful Lang Leav poetry books.

What is on your gift guide? Were you thinking of getting any of these for people? Buying gifts can be tricky, but it can also be a lot of fun. I’m getting so excited to buy presents for people this year. I have a lot more good decorating ideas that I might post here. I’ll also be looking at some cute ideas for wrapping presents!

White Rabbit Halloween Costume // Alice in Wonderland

This year for Halloween I decided to go with a classic, that is, a character from Alice in Wonderland. I wanted to do more of my take on in rather than a recreation of the character.

Most of my costume was found right in my closet. I think Halloween costumes look best when you’ve used vintage pieces and things that you already owned.

I was preparing for this for a few days and was planning on taking the photos for it today. As I drove home to take the pictures, flurries were surrounding me everywhere. By the time I was dressed it was full on snowing!

It was more like Alice in Wonderland meets a winter wonderland. But it was amazing! What a strange month we’re having.

There is currently so much snow outside that some of our trees are bending from the weight of it on their leaves!

Jacket- Vintage Dior

Blouse- TJMaxx

Skirt- H&M

Bunny ears, gloves, and tights- Spirit Halloween

(I don’t remember where I bought my shoes!)

My makeup was pretty simple and fun to do. I used a nice champagne eyeshadow all over the lid and then did a thick winged liner. I used a pop of red lipstick for that playful Alice look. I also dotted some extra freckles on my face using a MAC 266 brush and whatever matte brown eyeshadow would do from my Lorac Pro Palette.

And here is the little white rabbit from the book. I think it’s fun to do Halloween costumes that come from literature. If there was more time before Halloween I would try to do some more! I had plans for a Halloween party that ended up falling through, so I’m happy I got to dress up for a day, even if it was snowing. It was worth it for the pictures!

What are you dressing up for this Halloween? Let me know some other fun book characters that you’ve seen as costumes. I always think Daisy Buchanan is so fun.

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

― Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

SOME STUFF I’M LOVING (Beauty, Book, Writing, etc.)

I can’t believe it’s more than halfway through October. How is this all happening so quickly? I’m seeing the Christmas decorations in stores and I do not feel emotionally ready to take that on.

Our weather is unseasonably warm, so much so that we had the air conditioning on the other day. As I’m typing this my windows are wide open and there is no cold breeze in sight.

I’ve mentioned this before, but October has been good to me. I got even more amazing news about a really cool project that will be coming up next year and I’ve been working away on it. I feel like things are clicking into place, little by little, the way that they sometimes do. As I’ve watched the month fly by, I’ve also been enjoying a few things in it. They were small things that I’ve appreciated, so I thought I’d share.

Before I get to it, I wanted to say that I have a lot of really fun ideas for holiday blog posts, but I’m just not sure when to start doing them! Maybe mid-November? Is anytime before that acceptable at all?

Ok, back to the favorites:

Hempz Pomegranate Body Lotion

Even though the weather hasn’t turned freezing quite yet, it is so incredibly dry. We haven’t had rain in forever, at least not a long-lasting rain that really nourishes the ground. And as a result, my body is so dry. I use this after I shower and I try to put it on my legs and arms, focusing on the dry patches near my elbows and kneecaps and all that fun stuff. I never feel sticky or gross after using it, so it really absorbs into my skins nicely. Also, pomegranate scents are glorious.

Crabtree & Evelyn Body Wash in Rose (Not Pictured, Sorry!)

I got this a little while ago and I absolutely love the smell of it. I use it sometimes in the shower, but mostly I drip it into my bath as the water is filling to make beautiful-smelling bubbles. The formula is light and stays on your skin without giving you a headache (the way that some do) and I find it very relaxing. I was going to put it in these pictures but it was in the shower, and someone was using the shower, so…

Emily Dickinson’s Selected Poems

I took a break with novels for a bit this month and shifted to poetry because I’m going to be writing a lot next month and I needed to give my brain a break. My dad got me this at Barnes and Noble and not only is the cover beautiful, but the poetry is timeless and elegant and perfect for the fall and winter.

NaNoWriMo Prep

If I haven’t said this enough, I’m doing NaNoWriMo! I’ve been preparing so much every day to try and get ideas for my story so that when november 1st comes around, I’m ready.

I’ve been watching lots of Youtube videos of people prepping as well, and people doing vlogs from last year to see how the writing was going. It seems, in one word, stressful. But I am convinced that I’ve got this. There are great resources on the actual NaNoWriMo website that I highly recommend checking out. There are podcasts that I listened to and general writing guides and character analysis things. It’s all extremely exciting and I can’t wait to start.

So that’s what I’ve been really interested in so far this month. I am going to be doing some really cool things this weekend that I hope to share with you, and in general, I am hoping to end this month off good. There is a really cool supermoon coming up in November that I’m hoping to get a glimpse of. Hopefully it brings some positivity and balance into our lives. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
