My Week of Outfits

dscf5599

There are many ostentatious fashion blogs out there with such immaculate outfits that they make me look down at my own clothes in disgust. The truth is, I work every week at a library, and when I’m not doing that I’m usually writing. This doesn’t call for the most fantastic outfits, but it makes for some honest ones.

Some of these outfits I wore to work, some were worn around the house, and some were just what were nearest to me when I crawled from my slumber.

I noticed the hardest thing for me was trying to take photos of my clothes without sprucing them up with extra accessories or a bright lipstick, but I was trying to be honest.

What I really wanted was a true representation of what I wear in a week. I didn’t record my weekend outfits because I was with a dear friend and was having way too much fun to take full photos of what I was wearing. (How’s that for honest?)

The truth is I enjoy getting dressed in the morning. But it has become more important to me to be comfortable now rather than looking perfect fashion-wise. I know that I actually studied fashion, but I have admired cozy knits and billowing dresses more than anything skin tight. What we choose to put on our bodies reveals a lot about us. It tells other people what we wish they thought of us, and it tells them what we think of ourselves.

I really enjoyed doing this, although it was a bit difficult to unwrap myself from blankets and get out my tripod to capture a moment of my day. It was also sometimes boring to take a photo of my Star Wars t-shirt or pair of leggings that I was wearing. But if we don’t celebrate these clothes, even our comfiest of clothes, we don’t see the value in them. I am happy I saw these things in a new way. In my article in Artful Blogging, I talk about how you can change the way you seem an object once you take a photo of it, and that’s how I feel about these items that I wear every week.

I’ll be honest, I was a bit bitter that I could’t wear more spring-styled outfits. Winter is my favorite season, but spring has been teasing me. We got a taste of it, and now I am scowling at the freezing wind outside my door. But I suppose this is what nature has in store for us, so these comfy clothes will be needed a little longer.

After this week of photographing my outfits, I decided I needed to clean out my closet. I tore a lot of things out that just weren’t being worn anymore, and I put some new things in their places. Some beloved pieces are still hanging or sitting folded on my shelves and in my drawers. Clothing is intimate, which is an obvious statement, but probably something we don’t think about enough. It covers us, warms us, and helps us express ourselves. Now that my closet is cleaned, I walk into it every morning and feel as though I’m greeting lots of old friends, and that is always a comfort.

Let me know what you think about my week of outfits! This might be something I try again once it warms up, although I may be spending all my time outside instead. 🙂

Made for Walkin’

Hello Everyone!

I am in the middle of clearing out my room and my closet of all things I no longer need. Spring has arrived early for me, as in, spring cleaning and de-cluttering. Compartmentalizing what I use and don’t use has helped me decide what are my absolute favorite things to wear. I thought I would make a collection of all of my favorite shoes right now. These are the shoes that carry me through my day, the things that stay firmly on my feet while I fly around my many projects. Hopefully soon I will be able to wear them without tights or very thick socks.

I have to say, shoes are a lot more sentimental than I thought they were. Sometimes I put on a pair of shoes and remember wearing them last season or a year ago and I remember the trials and errors of my life at that time. They can make you remember things you swore you forgot.

I had one of my dearest friends over my house this weekend and she wore her pair of black vans. This morning after eating breakfast I looked down at her shoes that she had slipped off somewhere near the table and remembered in the fall when it was just starting to get cool outside and I was at her house in New Hampshire and I had no appropriate shoes to wear. She let me slip them on while we drove ourselves to get my first tattoo.

As I looked down at the shoes which were now in my kitchen, I could almost feel the ache on my wrist where my tattoo lives, and I remembered the experience so vividly . It reminded me that I should take care of these accessories, because they literally carry me through my life, and they collect memories with me.

Hello Everyone!

Here’s an official full outfit with my new hair. I’m quite happy with it! It’s brightened up my winter days, and for that, I am grateful. I’ve been experimenting wearing reds and oranges to see how they mesh together.

Today is Valentine’s Day, and I am without a Valentine. However, I spent my morning doing my hair and makeup, which can feel very therapeutic. I also spent a lot of time with friends and doing lots of writing, which is always a good thing.

Our days tend to be so filled and busy and full of bustling that we forget about our own stillness. Sometimes the best treat to ourselves is to give ourselves some space and time to suspend and just be. There is so much chaos that is going on that we forget about the importance of internal balance. This is something that I am constantly looking for, since my anxiety tends to kick in during busy times. It’s important to step back, look at things objectively, and then remain still.

I hope I can continue this act for the rest of winter. It seems we are all a little tightly-wound during the colder months, and it makes sense. But there is also a calling for warmth and kindness, and I am always personally more kind when I’ve been good to myself.

Suede & Rust

dscf5102

I’ve been wearing these suede booties every chance I get since there is just a little window of time before the snow starts falling. I’ve still been hanging on to Autumn with this rust colored skirt. It seems to go with everything, which is delightful. Black tights with black boots is my favorite thing right now.

Skirt: Forever 21

Boots: Old Navy

We have put up our holiday decorations, so I am really starting to feel festive. Tomorrow I’ll be putting up a holiday gift guide. I’ve never done that before, so I’m very excited!

Glasses & Hats (Ft. New Tattoo)

dscf1200

Hello everyone!

I’m sorry that I’ve been away from this blog for a little bit, there was a lot of stuff going on. Just some life updates, I got a tattoo, and possibly a new job! I’ve been enjoying my October so much, especially traveling around to different parts of New England and seeing the gorgeous colors on the trees. As for the tattoo, I finally go it, and I’m proud that I went through with it. I posted another pic on my Instagram, and it’s still healing, but this is how it looks right now.

And yes, it hurt. But since I wanted it for so long and because it felt so close to me (I did so many sketches before bringing it in to the tattoo parlor) I am proud to have it on my arm finally.

dscf1204

Also, I just want to fully express my love for October. I was talking about this with my friend because we are such fall people, we can get so annoying taking pictures of apples and leaves and “Oh, look at that barn, that’s a nice barn. Stand in front of the barn.” But truly, October embodies Autumn and it is so fleeting, and once it’s over, it’s over. November gets cold so quickly that it starts feeling like winter, and then it’s Christmas, and then it’s New Years, oh my gosh! So we were agreeing that we need to squeeze all of the Autumnal and Halloween excitement out of this one month. And so far, my month has been packed with plans and traveling and changes and new opportunities, and I am so in love with this month.

What has this month been like for you? I’ve been reading a ton (you could probably tell from my blog posts) and trying to do lots of outdoor activities. I actually made my own cider and it was absolutely delicious. I’m going to be preparing for NaNoWriMo (writing a novel in the month of November) so hopefully I’ll be updating you along the way!
